Soumya Govind Correspondence Course with Online Reading Lessons

The online reading lessons boost my confidence in speaking Japanese!

The online reading lessons in Kumon's correspondence course provide one-to-one communication with my instructor. She sometimes gives me sentences in English and asks me to say the corresponding Japanese from the textbook. These English-Japanese translation exercises are effective for learning vocabulary. Even though the lessons are brief (one 20 minute lesson every two weeks) they provide good listening and speaking practices, boosting my confidence in speaking Japanese.

I took level N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test last December and now I'm planning to take level N3 this year. Although I have a JLPT practice book, Kumon is still my main study material. This is because when I looked at the syllabus for JLPT level N3, I found that many of the kanji are covered in Kumon's material.

What I have learned in Kumon has benefited me in my daily life. For example, I didn't know the kanji on various electronic devices but now I am able to read them. I also found it very difficult to visit hospitals and explain my health condition to doctors, which has become hassle free now! Two months ago my internet connection had some problems and I had to call customer support. I spoke to them in Japanese and finally solved the problems. I was able to do that because I had gained the confidence to speak Japanese through Kumon.

I’m learning from every worksheet I study, which makes me feel really good!

I used to be a member of a Japanese learning website, but the videos and the other learning tools there didn't work for me. They introduce words and expressions, but do not explain how and when I should use them. But with Kumon's worksheets there are sufficient explanations making them easy to use properly. Moreover, the words I learn in a set of worksheets often reappear in the following sets. That makes remembering new vocabulary much easier.

In Kumon's correspondence course the instructor sends me new worksheets and I send her completed worksheets for grading. That system works for me, because receiving worksheets motivates me to keep on studying while I hold down a job. Once I start working on my assignment, I'm eager to finish it. I'm learning from every worksheet I study, which makes me feel really good.

With the online reading lessons my instructor helps me a lot. She always answers my questions and clears up any doubts I may have. She also corrects my pronunciation, which is my weak point! Thanks to the online lessons and course materials (worksheets, CDs and textbooks), I have been able to understand what people at work say to me, and also make myself understood.

At Kumon you can study at your own pace!

Kumon is good because I can study during my free time. Before, when I attended a Japanese class run by volunteers, I ran into the trouble of having to move forward to the next step without understanding the current step, whenever I was absent for class. At the Japanese class, I could remember the material during class, but I would forget about it later.

At Kumon, you yourself can determine the pace at which you study Japanese. Also, since Kumon uses worksheets, you can remember Japanese properly and look back on the worksheets later when you forget a word or a phrase. Also, the volunteer Japanese class I attended employed group-oriented lessons so I did not always have the chance to speak, but Kumon allows me to practice speaking Japanese through its one-on-one sessions with the instructor (even for a short period of time).

Furthermore, Kumon allows you to practice reading aloud Japanese, both individually and in front of the instructor, which naturally develops your Japanese conversation skills.

Kumon is the best for beginners like me!

I didn’t know Japanese at all when I came to Japan. I was only able to say “Konnichiwa” to Japanese people around me. I decided to learn Japanese so I can communicate with them.

For beginners like me Kumon is the best because they teach me properly how to read, write and pronounce Japanese. Kumon employs the method of self-learning, but when you don’t understand something, instructors are always there to help you. For me the most difficult part of Japanese is pronunciation, but I can practice reading with CDs, and when I don’t know how to pronounce, instructors are so helpful.
