Finding enjoyment in learning is a priority in Kumon Centers. In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to develop a system of education based upon the standpoint of the individual who is studying, the "learner." Speed of development as well as phases of development differ between individuals. If an individual encounters obstacles in learning, it is often the result of inadequacies in an earlier stage of development.

If a second grade student is having difficulty with vertical line calculations, it is often the case that sufficient mental practice in the initial stages of addition and subtraction was lacking while the student attended first grade. Praise and a feeling of accomplishment are particularly necessary for the student to gain confidence and enjoy learning so that he or she can proceed further from this point. Therefore, the instructor will allow the student to revert to the level of study where he or she could receive a full mark without any assistance from the instructor. This allows the student to again experience pride and a sense of achievement, from being able to do something "on his or her own." If these practices continue, with the student studying at his or her own pace, at a level appropriate to his or her abilities, the student in due course catches up to the appropriate grade level. This nurturing approach also leads to the student surpassing his or her grade level in achievements.

A breakdown of the methodology is as such:

· |
Students are not compared with one another |
· |
Instruction always corresponds to individual abilities
· |
Praising students is emphasized; this enhances the improvement of ability
· |
Self-confidence is instilled, leading to greater achievement

All the above, have been proven time and time again through numerous and documented examples of students who have studied with the Kumon Method.
